James MacMillan Ninian: a concerto

  • St Giles Cathedral (map)

Calum Robertson, clarinet and Jack Oades, organ

Introduced by Sir James MacMillan

This astonishing but rarely performed work was commissioned in 1997 to mark 1600 years since St Ninian, the first bishop of Whithorn, arrived in Galloway. Its three movements -- 'The reiver and the bull', 'The dream of Pectgils' and 'A mystical vision of the Christ-child' -- are based on some of the ‘Miracles of Ninian’, a set of strange and evocative tales about the saint and his followers written many years after his death. Uniquely for this performance, the original orchestral part has been transcribed for organ by Jack Oades.

Calum Robertson is an Edinburgh-based clarinettist, organist and choral conductor. He is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and regularly freelances The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and BBC Philharmonic.

Jack Oades is Organist and Master of the Music at St Giles' Cathedral. His compositions are widely performed all over the world, and he is in demand as an organ recitalist, with upcoming performances in Nice Cathedral, France and the Cuneo Organ Festival, Italy.

The recital will be introduced by Sir James MacMillan.
