Exploring Sacred Space 5

  • Old Saint Paul's Scottish Episcopal Church (map)

Hard by Waverley Station, Old Saint Paul’s current building was constructed in stages from the 1880s to 1926, when the remarkable War Memorial was completed. The Memorial comprises both a new entrance to the church and – over the stair – a chapel. In its hundredth anniversary year, Mark Gibson, author of a history of Old St Paul’s, will explore both the many coded messages embedded in the fabric of the Memorial, and the extraordinary emotional experience of the building that inspired Alison Watt’s breathtaking masterpiece Still, which hangs above the chapel’s stone altar.
